About Us

It Started With A Feeling…

It started with a feeling that really couldn’t be ignored…that childhood was meant to be lived outside…with dirt under fingernails, scarped knees, time to wander, and space to just be a kid.

That feeling didn’t come from one moment. It came from years of watching children thrive when they had room to move, explore, regulate, and connect with the natural world in their own way. It came as a result of many years working in early childhood development and through the lived reality of raising children...where development, behavior, sensory needs, and emotional growth are all happening at once, all the time.

Over time, a simple truth kept rising to the surface: children don’t need more rushing around, more sitting, or more structure. They need space. They need time in their bodies. They need nature. They need our trust. They need room to regulate and figure things out in their own way, with their whole bodies.

The more time spent watching children in different environments, the clearer it became: everything shifts when they’re outside. They settle. They get curious again. Their play becomes more open, more creative, more connected. It’s not something that needs to be taught…it’s something that show up when the conditions are right.

EverWild was created from that understanding.

So What Is EverWild?

EverWild is an all-weather, year-round nature play and learning space in Monmouth County, NJ. It’s a space where children can experience childhood outside, through real, hands-on play in nature. They dig, build, explore, move, imagine, and create in their own way and at their own pace. Nothing is overly directed. Nothing is rushed. Learning happens through experience, not instruction. Along the way, what develops naturally is confidence, independence, creativity, regulation, and connection.

The Approach

EverWild is inspired by Forest School principles, Reggio Emilia philosophy, and The Curiosity Approach… but at its core, it comes down to something simple: Children are trusted to lead their own play.

Here, we honor the child as capable, curious, and competent. Learning here is not directed from the outside in…it unfolds from the inside out, through experience. They’re given time, space, and real materials…mud, sticks, water, weather, movement, silence, laughter, and imagination…and allowed to learn through doing. Because when children are given that trust and freedom they develop a calm, thriving curiosity and some big joy. Every season becomes part of the classroom.

There are no walls here. And only one expectation: be kind.

For Families, Too

And while the focus is always on the children, there’s something meaningful that happens for parents as well…There’s space to slow down a little. To step back from constant managing. To watch your child in their element. And to connect with other families in the same season of life.

It’s a simple shift…but an important one.

Why It Exists

At its heart, EverWild is about this: Giving childhood back some of its natural rhythm. Slower. Outside. Real. Connected.

Because childhood belongs in the wild.
